Project idea

It is crucial to promptly confirm or rule out a diagnosis for children suspected of having autism spectrum disorder.

The earlier the condition is identified, the higher the likelihood that, with properly structured activities and appropriate therapy, a child with intellectual disabilities can approach developmental and behavioral norms corresponding to their age. At the same time, working with small children helps achieve greater results. This is precisely why it is crucial to establish the diagnosis as early as possible.

 The project includes three sections.

Diagnostics. The diagnostics will be conducted using the global gold standard for identifying early signs of autism, ADOS

After this, families whose sons and daughters are found to exhibit signs of autism spectrum disorder will be offered participation in a comprehensive professional support program to prepare their children for adaptation in society.

This program consists of personalized sessions with toddlers to minimize autism-related deficits as much as possible. It is planned to conduct 2 courses, each for 6 children. For 5 days, 4 hours daily, the children will systematically learn to follow a schedule, focus their attention, understand tasks, complete them, and so on.

At the same time, seminars are planned for the parents of these children, where moms and dads will be informed about the specifics of the autism diagnosis and taught how to properly respond to undesirable behavior in their child. This is done to ensure that assistance to the baby is as effective as possible. It has been proven that the quality of life and development of a person with ASD largely depends on the form of communication with their parents.

As a result, the family, having received comprehensive assistance and support, will fully prepare their child with mental disabilities for integration into society.

Relevance

Every year, more and more children with various forms of autism, who are unable to master the general education curriculum, enroll in school.

The reason for this situation lies in the fact that the child was not timely diagnosed correctly and did not receive quality and qualified assistance. As a result, such a child lacks the skills for socialization and communication with others.

The fact is that when a child is diagnosed with ASD, parents are most often offered a medication-based solution to the problem.

Medication alone is not enough because it does not address the underlying issues related to the deficits of children with autism.

In the case of autism spectrum disorder, psychological and pedagogical support is the most effective and productive approach. The earlier it is started, the higher the results in socialization and communication of such a child in society can be achieved.

This is why it is critically important for families raising an autistic child under the age of 5 to gain timely access to early intervention programs for such children.

These programs will help adjust the child's condition and provide parents with effective methods for the child's further quality development.

Project Results

The children who participated in the project achieved positive results. All children who completed the program experienced an increased chance of being included in the inclusive educational process. Two children transitioned to preschool educational institutions, three continue studying under the program, and one child moved on to group classes.

The parents received a sufficient amount of qualitatively new information for rational behavior in communicating with their child and for their upbringing and development.

During the project, children suspected of having autism were able to receive timely diagnostic opportunities and comprehensive support to develop social and academic skills.

At the same time, parents who had acquired the necessary knowledge practiced these skills at home.

In summer urban camps, children were able to practically develop their communication skills with the people around them.

Project progress after CSS funding

Thanks to the implementation of the project and the development of the program, there is an opportunity and a need to replicate the system for early detection of children with autism spectrum disorders in other NGOs and government structures.

The sources of resource support for the project in the future will include:

-Charitable donations from individuals, business companies, and private charitable foundations;

-Federal, municipal, and regional grants.
