Project idea

The "Happy at Home" project is designed for families planning to foster a child with special health needs and who want to fully assess their capabilities and resources before making an important decision.

The idea of the project is to create a Foster Parenting Adaptation and Rehabilitation Center in a remote format. Thanks to it, people who want to become foster parents for children with special developmental needs will be able to receive maximum support online for a comprehensive assessment of their capabilities before making a final decision on guardianship.

To this end, it is planned to open access to the Database of Unique Video Profiles of Orphans, which contains not only visual information about the child but also conclusions from qualified specialists regarding an individual approach to them.

By developing personalized programs that include medical, rehabilitation, and adaptation support, it is possible to create comfortable conditions during the child's adaptation period in the family.

This is especially important for families living in remote areas, where there is no opportunity to receive quality and qualified assistance for all arising issues.

The project has the following activities planned:

  • Developing and conducting training courses for foster parents of children with special developmental needs;
  • Recording a series of webinars and interviews with industry experts on the most pressing questions for the target audience;

Organizing long-term remote support for foster families, ensuring targeted assistance for their children's rehabilitation and treatment.

Relevance

Most prospective adoptive parents are unaware that nearly every orphan living in a children's social institution has some health issues.

Based on statistics for Russia in 2020, the top-5 diseases among orphans are:

  • CNS pathology (95-100%).
  • Cardiopathology (65-70%).
  • Diseases of the skin and musculoskeletal tissue (45-50%).
  • Diseases of the sensory organs (25–30%).
  • Urinary tract diseases (25–30%).
  • Every second child has a delay in physical development.

Potential adoptive parents do not find the information from the Federal Database on Orphaned Children and the disease code values according to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, clear enough.

Many of the candidates have no idea what lies behind this or that diagnosis, how to treat and control it, what kind of assistance from the state and NGOs can be counted on.

The "Happy at Home" project will help potential caregivers get answers to the questions they are worried about. And for families already raising children with special developmental needs, to receive timely, high-quality, and qualified assistance during adaptation and in the process of raising the child.

The "Happy at Home" project is especially necessary for families from remote areas where rehabilitation centers and specialized professionals are essentially nonexistent.

Social effect

Increasing the knowledge of parents and society about the adaptation, care, and development of children with special needs in foster families, and promoting foster parenting.

Project Results

The filming and screenings of 10 short films featuring foster families raising orphans with special health needs (Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, etc.) have drawn public attention to this issue.

Many prospective adoptive parents speak of increased motivation, awareness, and boosted confidence.

Thanks to the Knowledge Base, parents of children with special health needs were able to receive quality, qualified assistance and information on the development, treatment, and rehabilitation of their children. This is especially important for families living in remote areas.

All materials are accessible and understandable to the general public, supplemented with numerous illustrative examples.

Many families resolved psychological issues during periods of adaptation and crises. The Psychology and Adaptation Module turned out to be the most in demand. Almost all participants took advantage of individual consultations and resolved their pressing issues.

20 video profiles of children with special health needs were recorded. Five children who were presented there have already found their families. These families joined the "Happy at Home" project for long-term support.

Project progress after CSS funding

Through organizing thematic meetings, it is planned to start searching for new partners in the regions where the "Happy at Home" project will take place, who will be interested in the further development of the project.

It is also planned to seek assistance from the Foundation's regular partners. To reach a new audience of beneficiaries and donors through media campaigns.
