Project idea

The project’s aim is social and physiological adaptation of children with special health needs. The project sets forth the following key objectives:

1) To make adaptive climbing accessible to children with special health needs by training educators and mentors.

 2) To assist in integrating children and teenagers with special health needs into mainstream environments, enhancing the understanding and tolerance of neurotypical children towards those with special health needs.

3) To foster a healthy self-esteem for successful transition into adulthood and a positive outlook amongst children. To discover the potential for sports in children and teenagers with special health needs through training.

4) To contribute to the holistic, harmonious development of children with special health needs via adaptive climbing activities.

To accomplish these tasks, the following events will be organized:

-Establishment of 3 sites to present the “I can!” project and recruit teacher mentors and children with special health needs for participation in the project at the “FOREST” tourism and local history festival. At these sites, master classes on paraclimbing, training sessions for mentors and volunteers, and a dedicated area for parents will be conducted

-Seminars and lectures for mentors and educators with elements of a training platform.

Master classes for children with special health needs and their families.

Relevance

Tyumen Region is home to 5,530 children with disabilities and special health needs aged 8 to 17.  Physical disorders in children lead to mental disorders (memory weakens, interests narrow, speech function is impaired), asthenization of the body develops, pathological changes in the neuromuscular apparatus increase.) According to studies, adaptive climbing is highly effective in combating these processes. It also yields good results comparable to advanced sensorimotor rehabilitation

techniques. In addition, climbing is suitable for many children depending on the severity of the disease. Unfortunately, this wonderful sport is very underdeveloped in Russia, and the “I Can!” project was created to remedy this problem.

Adaptive climbing has numerous positive effects on children with special health needs:

enhancement of overall and fine motor skills; cultivating the habit of executing movements in harmony with all body parts. Precise foot placement on holds requires coordinated eye and foot movements.  this skill can be applied in

maintaining an upright posture while walking.

children are able to execute movements

that they were previously unable to perform, thereby broadening their range of motions and strengthening muscles;

formation of correct posture and

strengthening of the spine.

Social impact:

families where children with physical disabilities are brought up live rather closed lives. Participation in the project will allow these families to spend more active time, socialize with other parents and children.

The project will prepare coaches and volunteers to work with children with special health needs in other parts of the Tyumen Region.  New methods and invaluable experience in adaptive climbing will be disseminated. The necessary equipment and facilities for this purpose will also be procured.

Social effect

Popularization of adaptive climbing and an increase of this sport’s accessibility among children with special health needs residing in Tyumen Region.

Project Results

Children and teenagers (aged 8 to 17) with special health needs and their families took part in the adaptive climbing project “I Can!”. Also, participants included specialists and mentors who are working or aspire to work with children and teenagers with special health needs.

Children and teenagers with disabilities and special health needs were introduced to climbing, gaining fundamental knowledge and basic skills in this sport. Children and teenagers participated in adaptive climbing master classes not only in their local area but also in other cities, attended specialized forums, and gave demonstration performances. All of these activities contributed to socialization, interaction with new people, and the expansion of boundaries. Apart from using the climbing wall, the children learned to interact with their peers in a group, work in pairs, support each other, communicate and make acquaintances with new adults.

Parents were engaged in joint activities with their children, participated in the training process, learned to perform top rope belay at the climbing wall, understood the training plan for their child, and are now capable of supporting their children’s physical activity outside of training sessions. They are also now knowledgeable about and able to carry out a series of exercises at home with their children to develop coordination, balance, and both gross and fine motor skills.

The project trained volunteers, mentors, teaching staff, and coaches from the Tyumen Region to facilitate the implementation of the adaptive climbing program.

This series of activities increased awareness and accessibility of adaptive climbing for children and teenagers with special health needs and their families.

Project progress after CSS funding

Further development is planned through funds raised from sponsors and project partners. Children and teenagers will continue to attend institutions for additional education.

The project’s implementation is ongoing. On April 9, 2023, demonstration performances in the form of competitions were held at the Pioneer Art and Sports Club Tourism and Local History Center.

An additional, comprehensive educational program on adaptive climbing was introduced in the city of Tyumen, Tyumen District, and other locations. In Tobolsk and Ishim, plans are underway to implement an additional comprehensive educational program in institutions for supplementary education for children in the upcoming academic year. In Zavodoukovsk, regular adaptive climbing master classes are planned to be conducted at the secondary school.
