Project idea

A fundamental condition for the successful independent life of graduates from orphanages and young people with orphanhood experience is having their own housing and the ability to organize all aspects of adult life.

As part of the project, young people on the housing waitlist can access a unique temporary accommodation service at the “House of Chance” in Kaliningrad. This project has been in existence for over 20 years. The foundation’s team provides young people with orphanhood experience a safe living space and the opportunity to acquire and develop independence skills.

In turn, young people who already have their own home can turn to the project for legal, psychological, and domestic consultations.

The approach to support at “House of Chance” is flexible, taking into account young people’s personal needs. Interaction is carried out in individual and group formats through consultations, discussions, and developmental activities.

Based on monitoring conducted by the foundation among orphanage graduates living independently, the main difficulties and problems of adult life were identified. This information is integrated into a system and used to prepare the project’s beneficiaries for independent living.

Within the framework of the project, activities are implemented among all participants aimed at expanding social support, developing resilience, social competence, psychological stability, and engaging young people in their future independent lives. The House operates a hotline providing consultation and other forms of support.

Young people will have the opportunity for temporary accommodation and comprehensive support, which will strengthen their life resources and prepare them for successful independent living.

Graduates living independently will increase their confidence and activity in solving current problems.

Project participants will develop psychological flexibility and social competence through participation in developmental psychological meetings.

Developmental sessions in various areas (social and domestic, legal, socio-cultural, economic, and psychological) will allow them to acquire skills in financial planning, household management, apartment improvement, interaction with governmental and non-governmental services, constructive communication, and self-preservation behavior.

The project is long-term and integrated into the region’s post-institutional support system. The House is located in a nice neighborhood of the city, designed to accommodate ten people, operates around the clock, without holidays and weekends.

Relevance

The most pressing issue for graduates of orphanages is resolving the housing question. There are more than 2,000 people in need of housing in the Kaliningrad Region, while the rate of housing provision remains low. The project provides temporary accommodation while waiting for an apartment, as well as legal support in the process of exercising housing rights.

Modern orphanage graduates often suffer from chronic physical and mental health issues, various disorders, and tendencies toward dependency and deviant behavior. The project’s activities are aimed at strengthening the physical and psychological resources of young people, providing them with socio-psychological and socio-medical services.

Monitoring conducted in 2022 showed that graduates had low needs for self-development, personal growth, and continuing education. The project includes activities to support their motivation for self-improvement and professional growth.

The project’s social significance lies in its aim to alleviate the current social problems of orphanage graduates, facilitating their successful integration into society and improving their quality of life.

Social effect

Improving the quality of life for orphanage graduates in Kaliningrad through the opportunity of temporary residence in a training apartment and their comprehensive support for transitioning to independent living.

Project Results

Young people were given the opportunity for temporary residence and comprehensive support in the House, building up their life resources necessary for getting ready to live independently and successfully.

- Young people living independently increased their level of confidence and activity in solving current problems.

- Through participation in developmental psychological meetings, participants developed psychological flexibility and social competence.

- Through participation in developmental sessions focused on social, welfare, legal, sociocultural, economic, and psychological aspects, young people living in the House and those receiving day support developed skills in financial planning, household management, apartment improvement, interaction with governmental and non-governmental services, constructive communication with others, and self-preservation behavior.

The results of comprehensive support are reflected in the individual support plans for young people. At the end of the project, the project participants’ socio-psychological adaptation was monitored. The goal of these diagnostics was to mobilize personal resources and prevent social maladaptation of project participants. The monitoring results formed the basis for developing individual recommendations aimed at the socio-psychological development of young people.
