Project idea

Children with mental disabilities are more likely to become victims of violence. And the period of puberty in such children may be accompanied by bouts of aggression.

The books published within the framework of the project will help children and adolescents with mental disabilities better understand their bodies, recognize their boundaries, and learn about safety.

Relevance

For children with mental disabilities, a specific presentation of information in books and special illustrations that take into account their perception are important. But these books are also suitable for neurotypical children, fostering a tolerant attitude towards people with developmental disabilities.

Social effect

Overcoming the information vacuum in matters of sexual education for children with mental disabilities.

Project Results

A large number of families have become closer to their children and have been able to go through their growing-up period more calmly. The percentage of violence decreased as teenagers with disabilities began to better understand what was happening with their bodies and were able to better control their boundaries and emotions. The academic performance of children in schools and their behavior in PNI (psychoneurological institutions) improved.

Thanks to the new knowledge, it has become easier for PNI employees to find common ground with children of this age, and staff turnover and emotional burnout have decreased.

Project progress after CSS funding

A study is planned on the importance of sex education for children with intellectual disabilities, to prove the fact that sex education is important for the prevention of violence and harassment, as well as for teaching children to control arousal and for emotional regulation. A program is also planned to train specialists (teachers, educators, defectologists, social educators) in the basics of sex education for children with special needs. Also, a series of interactive sessions are planned for adults living in PNIs to help them understand all aspects of sexual maturation and intimacy.
