About inclusion development at schools
Speaking about why it is so important to increase understanding of life with disabilities in society
Every time we read comments on articles about your projects in our Yandex Dzen - it makes our blood run cold.
-Readers are angry that charities focus on people with disabilities.
-Readers are outraged that we use the word "special" to describe people with disabilities.
-People criticize the idea of inclusion and say it should be replaced by isolation.
It's not nice to read criticism like this, but it shows what many people in Russia think. It's important to work on this.
This is what our grantee, the Perspektiva Foundation, is doing.
The project "Practices of Inclusion in a Comprehensive School" has been completed. It included training for teachers on understanding disability, online consultations with experts on inclusive education, "Kindness Lessons," and film screenings that teach students to be tolerant of each other. It also included face-to-face consultations for parents and specialists, and large inclusive events. Sixteen schools in Novosibirsk, Ivanteevka, and Serpukhov participated in the project. The CSS-supported project lasted 11 months. It was attended by 4234 students, 264 teachers, webinars were listened to by 3224 people: parents, school administrators, teachers.
The post is illustrated with a comment from a fifth grader (!), a participant of the Kindness Lessons, which shows that the goal of the project is being achieved and our children are better than us!
“These are very cool and interesting activities! I never realized that people with disabilities are so diverse and can do so many things! Of course, I knew that people with disabilities can work, but the fact that a person in a wheelchair can do figure skating and an invisible person can work quietly on a computer, I did not assume.
I think that everyone should learn to interact with people with disabilities, because in our life anything can happen, and it is so important to be oriented sometimes to help. And it's also important to be able to communicate with everyone and not feel too sorry and look polite. Thank you so much for these interesting classes!”
